Adoption

Adoption is one of the preferred means for LGBTQ2S+ people to start their families. There are many types of adoption.

International adoption is unfortunately not available to many LGBTQ2S+ people because most countries of origin, where adoptable children are born, have restrictions around gender and sexual diversity.

Fortunately, adoption in Quebec is accessible to our communities. The process generally chosen, because it is more rapid, is called the «Mixed Bank». Adoption of children whose parents relinquish their rights immediately at birth is also possible, but much rarer. The adoption of a partner’s child is also possible if the child only has one legally recognized parent on their birth certificate or if the second parent renounces their legal rights and responsibilities toward the child.

Finally, different types of customary indigenous adoptions exist as well and are practiced in Québec.
